  1. Confirm the notary’s legal commission with your state and check the platforms security.

  2. If they are a RON-remote online notary-confirm that the notary holds the proper authorization to perform online notarizations in their commissioning state.

  3. Inspect the digital document.

  4. Check for digital certificates: if you received a document that was notarized online, open it in a pdf viewer to validate the digital signature. Authentic notarizations contain a tamper-evident seal and a valid digital certificate. 

  5. Review the audit trail. A compliant RON Platform will provide a secure portal and a complete audit trail of the session.

  6. Check for htts://, indicating that your data is encrypted.

  7. Look for explicit contact information. Legitimate notary services display their physical business address, phone number, and a clear privacy policy.

  8. Verify ID verification processes. Remote notary websites are legally required to use secure, multi-step identity verification, including (KBA) knowledge-based authentication and id credentials.
